United Way of Rockland County Announces

Recipients of the 2003 Vision Grant Program

The United Way of Rockland County Board of Directors is pleased to announce the recipients of the UWRC 2003 Vision Grant Program.  As a result of the UWRC’s extensive disaster relief work since September 11, 2001, the Board decided to utilize this year’s Vision Grant Program to fund special initiatives within the UWRC vision area entitled “Assisting People in Crisis”.

More than $30,000, donated specifically for the UWRC Vision Grant Program by an anonymous donor, will be disseminated to nine Rockland non-profit agencies who applied for the grant this fall through a special application process.  Only 25% of the agencies receiving funding this year are currently receiving allocations support through the UWRC Community Care Fund as Member Agencies.

“This year we will have given over $825,000 in cash grants and another $400,000 in gifts in kind to Rockland non-profit agencies through our Community Care Fund, Gifts in Kind, State Employees Fundraising Appeal, Combined Federated and Donor Choice campaigns” stated Dr. Mary B. Ritchey, Vice President for Vaccine R & D Quality Assurance at Wyeth and this year’s UWRC Chair.  “Through the Vision Grant Program and other UWRC initiatives we are continually working to find ways to fund even more non-profit programs to benefit all Rockland residents.  I am particularly pleased that even more individual and corporate donors are partnering with us to help us assist the community this year.”

The 2003 UWRC Vision Grant Program initiatives that will be funded this year are:

·                 Providing for emergent transportation for HIV patients through the Mid Hudson Valley AIDS Task Force

·                 Reaching out to more reclusive elderly survivors of the Holocaust through a special Holocaust Museum & Study Center program

·                 Supporting the “Just for Dads” program aimed at better parenting of “high risk” children in crisis

·                 Funding counseling through the Rockland Parent Child Center for incarcerated parents

·                 Supporting the ECHO National Institute for Health’s ability to assist with emergency medical communications

·                 Providing training through Volunteer Counseling Services for young adults with disabilities to become peer counselors for Jawonio consumers

·                 Subsidizing enrollment at VISIONS for blind Rockland residents living in group homes

·                 Providing critical Patient Review Instrument Certification training for two nurses at Home Aides of Rockland and

·                 Funding South Rockland Interfaith Volunteer Caregiver’s efforts to coordinate transportation and other assistance to frail, elderly and disabled members of the community

“We received a record number of applications for the Vision Grant Program this year” commented Naomi Adler, President of the United Way of Rockland County.  “We are so pleased that the non-profit community in Rockland is recognizing that their United Way is a source for help for everyone.  Of course we are also redoubling our efforts to increase donations so that we can continue to fund the best Health and Human Services non-profit programs in Rockland.”
