United Way of Rockland County Announces United Way of America's Long-Term National Response to Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina Response Fund activated to aid immediate relief and long-term recovery

Nyack, New York – In the wake of the unimaginable destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina throughout the Gulf Coast states and up into the Ohio Valley, thousands of people are waiting helplessly to return to their communities and assess what will be needed to put their lives back together.

"Our hearts and prayers go with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. United Way of Rockland County, along with our agency members, always play a key role in helping people in need. With your generosity, United Way will again lead the relief fund for both immediate and long-term recovery," said Dr. S. Ram Nagubandi, Commissioner of Human Rights for Rockland County and Chairman of the Board of United Way of Rockland County.

United Way is leading response and recovery efforts by working hard to identify the most serious needs of communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and is committed to helping not only with front-line disaster relief but also with long-term recovery -- those needs that are often not addressed until weeks, months or years following a disaster.

"We encourage the Rockland Community to donate to the American Red Cross' Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund for immediate relief purposes and to the United Way's Hurricane Katrina Response Fund for long-term recovery efforts," said Naomi Adler, President of United Way of Rockland County.

The United Way Hurricane Katrina Response Fund is an easy way to help people in affected communities begin rebuilding their lives. All funds will be allocated for both front-line disaster relief and long-term recovery needs, as determined by local United Ways in affected areas in coordination with a vast network of human services agencies and volunteer centers.
