Wyeth Works Wonders for Local Family

Home Improvement Project Raises Awareness of United Way’s Day of Caring

Nyack, NY, September 16 – When Wyeth employees set out to complete a community service project to support United Way’s Day of Caring, they had no idea how big the project was going to turn out to be. “We’re talking huge,” said Jim Gibson, one of the Wyeth employees who spearheaded this project.  “When we saw the potential for this project, we just ran with it,” added Barbara Wancho, also of Wyeth. The project: a home improvement effort for a family recommended by Jawonio.  The results:  a completely refurbished, redecorated and renewed mobile home for the Harris family.

“When I recommended this project to Wyeth, I figured they would slap on some new paint and slap down some new carpet,” said Diane Serratore, Director of Community Impact for United Way of Rockland County.   “I had no idea this project was going to get so big.  Still, the Wyeth folks stepped up to the plate and hit a big home run for the Harris family,” she said.

Day of Caring will be held this year on October 5, 2007 and begins with a kick-off breakfast and rally at Nyack High School.  Day of Caring is the largest day of corporate community service benefiting Rockland non-profit organizations.  It provides area businesses with the opportunity to encourage their employees to represent their companies in this enriching day of community service.   More importantly, Day of Caring offers companies, their employees and community members the chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of hundreds of people right here in Rockland county.

Last year, nearly 40 companies and 20 non-profits participated in Day of Caring.  This year, UWRC is looking to recruit even more participants.  Companies looking to volunteer and non-profits with community service needs are encouraged to register for Day of Caring 2007.  The deadline for registration has been extended to September 24, 2007.

United Way of Rockland County is a local, independent non-profit dedicated to building a stronger Rockland community.  Here in Rockland we are focused on the most critical issues including protecting and meeting basic needs, nurturing children and youth and enhancing seniors’ independence.  Rockland’s United Way brings together people and resources from the entire county to create lasting changes in everyone’s lives.  Your contribution to United Way of Rockland County’s Community Care Fund is an investment that gets results.
