The Coronavirus Youth Committee was started by the United Way of Rockland and the Rockland County Health Department for the purpose of bringing a group of youth together to create informational messages about the Coronavirus, and share this information with their peers. Many partner organizations also committed to these efforts and brought youth to the Committee, including, the Haverstraw Center, Martin Luther King Center, BRIDGES, Spring Valley NAACP and the Rockland County Youth Bureau.

The goals of this Committee are to dispel the misconceptions about youth and the Coronavirus, as well as to educate youth about staying safe. The two big misconception are (1) youth cannot get the virus (2) youth cannot spread the virus. Studies show that people of all ages can be infected with the virus, and the Center for Disease Control states that 25% of people infected with the Coronavirus don't present any symptoms or fall ill, but can still transmit the illness to others. This is critical to understand because every decision we make, whether good or bad, affects another person.

The main message points include:

  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your cough and sneeze with your arm
  • Practice social distancing - stay 6 feet apart
  • Stay home, leave your home only for medical care or to get necessary items
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects regularly

We ask all youth throughout Rockland County to join the #YouthCanGetIt2 campaign.
